We're suckers for a good piece of toast, and this concept design would be able to make every piece of toast perfect. It uses heated glass to toast bread to perfection. Inventables, the design company behind this masterpiece, says that currently the glass doesn't get hot enough to toast bread, but maybe in the future.

Transparent toaster allows you to see the bread while it is toasting so you never surprised by toast that comes out too dark. This idea is based on the transparent heating glass featured in this issue. Although the glass does not currently get hot enough to toast bread, some day this application may be possible.

Coffee and espresso machines are now available so that you can have coffeehouse quality coffee drinks in the comfort of your own home. The latest trend is toward coffee makers that make individual cups of coffee using pods, or small airtight packages that stay sealed until opened by the coffeemaker. In Europe these have been popular for a while, and they will get you close to a European coffee experience. The coffee tends to be strong, more like espresso, but is very fresh since your serving stays sealed until you make it, unlike that big tub of Folgers. They are more common now, but finding the pods can still be difficult sometimes, and you may not have as many varieties available to you as there are for regular old ground coffee.

We need longer and longer slots because of these insane breads we keep buying. We do have a toaster oven, but I've often found we just don't get the toasted toast we want. I think this toaster oven is kind of ugly, but I do like the idea of cooking 40 percent faster. Waiting 5 minutes for my toast to cook is too long! The toaster cooks food faster because it has an infrared light system, which eliminates the need to preheat. The Back to Basics Egg & Muffin Toaster

What's the difference: Not only does it toast bread or English muffins, it also cooks eggs and heats breakfast meats. (Hey, the drive-through breakfast experience in your own kitchen!) It uses steam to poach a single egg in a shallow pan or soft- or hard-boil as many as four eggs in a rack. It can make toast at the same time.

What we thought: "Back to Basics," our Aunt Frannie. This gizmo is an awful lot to deal with first thing in the morning. The manufacturer instructs you to spray the poaching pan with nonstick cooking spray, break an egg into it and then break its yolk with a fork (so it will have that authentic mass-produced drive-through breakfast sandwich quality). Then you measure water into the heating tray, insert the steaming tray and set the poaching pan on that and top it with the optional meat-warming tray. Finally, you put the lid on the egg gadget and insert your bread in the toast slots.

Still, it works (although the center of the slice gets decidedly browner than the edges), and it's cleverly timed so that the poached egg, warmed meat and toast are all ready at the same moment. (You can't make toast while steam-boiling eggs, though.) It might be useful in a dorm room.

Toasters are one of the most useful kitchen appliances, and at the same time also one of the simplest. You put bread in the top, push the lever, and a few minutes later it pops up: toast! The most basic toasters are very cheap indeed, and worth every penny for all the use you can get out of them. However, unlike with many appliances, you will see visible improvements for every extra little bit of money you spend on your toaster. You can go from two slices at a time to four, from two minutes' cooking time to one, get a bun rack for toasting things like croissants, get the capability to toast frozen bread, extra lift to allow you to toast smaller things like crumpets and muffins, and all sorts of other features besides.

Whether or not you need these features will generally depend on what you want to toast: if you just want toasted bread, you should be fine with a normal toaster, but if you want to toast all sorts of bread products, you start needing some other features, especially the extra lift and the bun rack. It can also be difficult to find the exact combination of features you want in a colour and design you would like, but don't give up: just about every combination is out there somewhere.

One thing to be aware of with toasters is that, if toast or something else somehow gets stuck, you should never try to remove it with a metal knife or other metal object, because they conduct electricity and can lead to an electric shock. You should also make sure to keep the toaster away from water, and be careful not to use frozen bread unless the toaster is capable of it. Another popular kind of toaster is the sandwich toaster, which differs from the usual slot toaster in that you put in more slices of bread, usually four, with things in between, and they then become sandwiches. This can be especially effective if you use things that will melt, like cheese, in the sandwiches - the traditional toaster's inability to melt things onto the toast has long been considered a disadvantage.

Toasters have been around for more than 100 years and the Slate took on the task of testing eight toasters to see which one was really the toast of the town. Using a highly scientific scale which judged toasting quality, ease of use, cleanup and value, the toasters were put to the test. After too many loaves of bread to count, the results were in.

Cleaning Toasters

Toasters are crumb catchers and smudge collectors. They need regular attention to keep them clean, shiny, and crumb-free. Here's what you should do:

Remember to unplug the toaster and let it cool before cleaning it. Never immerse the toaster in water.

Wipe the exterior of the toaster regularly. Remove the crumb tray at the base of the toaster and shake out accumulated crumbs; wash the tray in warm soapy water.

If your toaster does not have a crumb tray, turn the toaster upside down and shake it over the sink or a large garbage can.
